Common Questions

Find answers about visiting longhouses, what to bring, and how to prepare for your cultural journey.

What should I bring for a longhouse visit?

Comfortable walking shoes, light clothing suitable for humid conditions, modest attire for cultural respect, insect repellent, personal toiletries, any necessary medications, and a small gift for your hosts such as packaged food items. We provide detailed packing lists after booking.

Are the experiences suitable for families with children?

The day visit is appropriate for children of all ages. Overnight experiences work well for children aged 8 and above who are comfortable with basic sleeping arrangements. The five-day journey is recommended for teenagers and adults due to physical activity levels. All children must be accompanied by adults.

What is the accommodation like during overnight stays?

Overnight longhouse stays involve sleeping on traditional mats or thin mattresses in communal sleeping areas. Facilities are basic with shared bathing areas (river bathing or simple washing stations). The experience emphasizes cultural authenticity over comfort, though all safety and hygiene standards are maintained.

How physically demanding are these experiences?

The day visit requires moderate fitness for walking and sitting in boats. The two-night stay includes some jungle walking and early morning activities. The five-day journey involves more extensive walking, boat travel, and adaptability to changing conditions. We adjust activities based on participant capabilities within reason.

What are the payment and cancellation terms?

A 30% deposit secures your booking with full payment due 14 days before departure. Cancellations made more than 30 days in advance receive a 90% refund. Between 14-30 days: 50% refund. Less than 14 days: no refund. We recommend travel insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances.

How do you ensure respectful cultural exchange?

Our cultural interpreters brief participants on appropriate behavior and customs before arrival. We work only with communities who have chosen to welcome visitors on their terms. Photography guidelines respect privacy wishes. We maintain small group sizes and compensate host communities fairly for their hospitality and time.
